Freedom and the lack off it are recurring themes in Stan Linssen’s sculptures. In a slightly absurdist, humorous way he shows us situations in which both forces are at odds with each other. Where and how we grew up is inextricably linked to us, no matter how free we want to feel. The modern traveler already knows what he is going to see and he prefers to take everything with him that is dear to him at home. Modern media is shrinking our world. We actually don’t have to leave our home anymore to know the world, yet we travel like never before. Why? Stan builds up his sculptures with slabs of clay and he finishes them with engobes and glazes in a way that it seems as if the sculptures already had a whole life or journey behind them.

In addition to these sculptures, Stan makes engobe-decorated ceramics. Sculptures; hand built vases; tiles and wall plaques. A modern reference to the traditional ceramics between Maas and Lower Rhine.

Biography

Stan Linssen (1958) spent his childhood in his birthplace Tegelen, at a time when the brick and tile factories were still located in the middle of the village. “You could just go there to pick up slabs of clay. And in the morning I was awakened by the sound of the clay trains that came from the Heide down the slope, loaded with sand and clay, from which the rooftiles were made. Working with clay’ will become an important métier for him. That only comes to the foreground during his studies.

After secondary school, he attends the Pedagogical Academy where he obtains the master’s degree in Craftsmanship. He then registers at the TeHa in Sittard, a broadly oriented teacher training course where he becomes acquainted with both applied as free design. He is taught by Frans Lagro, among others, and is graduating in the free design. Two years later, ceramist Stan Linssen has his first exhibition.

But he is not only active as a ceramist. Between 1993 and 2000 he was closely involved in the development of the Keramiekcentrum De Tiendschuur in Tegelen as a course center and museum, first as a teacher, later also as a curator. From 2002 to September 2020 he is affiliated with the Limburgs Museum in Venlo, as assistant curator and then as [exhibition] designer. ‘My knowledge of applied and autonomous art comes in handy every day in my museum work. I speak the language of both the designer and the visual artist.’

In addition to this work, he remains active as a ceramic artist. After 18 years and many exhibitions later, he decides to fully devote himself again to art and ceramics in particular.
